Phoenix Wright is a courtroom based game in which you play as Phoenix Wright, a novice lawyer who is just starting his profession. His mentor, Mia Fey, leads him through his first case but is later mysteriously murdered as she tries to keep evidence of another trial secret. Phoenix Wright is able to find the culptrit and continues to be a lawyer on his own. As he faces his trials, he meets people like Mia's sister, Maya Fey, and his rival, Miles Edgeworth. Although the cases he takes are all different, they all unify in a common thread that links everything throughout the game,

The gameplay is divided into two sections. First, you must investigate around crime scenes in order o find evidence that can be used in court. You can meet witnesses, police officers, and other people who you can talk with to get information. You can also present pieces of evidence to people to get them to talk. Later, you can see when people are hiding something through "psyche locks", physical manifestations of people's efforts to hide secrets. These locks can be broken by providing evidence to show that the person is hiding something.

Next, you enter the courtroom, where the prosecution provides witnesses to the crime that testify against your client. As a defense attourney, you must search for contradictions with the witness's testimony by showing a piece of evidence that contradicts with their statements. You can also press the witness for more information. However, making to much mistakes in finding contradictions will cost you penalties and may lose you the case.
